Whiteland man jailed on child pornography charges

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Johnson Co. Prosecutor's Office on Friday filed charges of Possession of Child Pornography, a Level 5 felony, on John Cassin, 75, of Whiteland. During the execution of a search warrant at 136 Windemere Rd., in Whiteland, detectives seized a desktop computer from the residence.

According to the probable cause affidavit, investigators allege that Cassin used his home computer to look up images of underage children engaging in explicit sex acts. The suspect was arrested and remanded to the Johnson County Jail.

The Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office says the charges are level 5 felonies due to the explicit nature of the images. A level 5 felony has a sentencing range of one year to six years, with a presumptive sentence of three years and a fine of up to $10,000.

The defendant is presumed innocent of the charges against him until proven guilty.

Pair arrested trying to cash stolen check

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Public relations officer Lt. Matt Harris with the Columbus Police Department (CPD) says law enforcement arrested two people after they attempted to cash a stolen check on Thursday afternoon. Officers responded to the drive-through of Centra Credit Union, 601 Union St., around 3:30 p.m.

Bank officials advised that Travis D. Lyles, 35, of Columbus, was supposedly attempting to pass a personal check from an account that was closed due to stolen checks. CPD also spoke with a passenger in the vehicle, Amber F. Harris, 34, of Columbus, and allegedly found several driver’s licenses and social security cards in her purse that were reported stolen during a separate theft from a vehicle in Columbus last month.

Both Lyles and Harris were placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail. Lyles was charged with attempted forgery and Harris was booked for theft.
