CPD accepting applications for Columbus Public Safety Academy

COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Columbus Police Department is now accepting applications for the 2019 Columbus Public Safety Academy. This program gives participants a “behind the scenes” look at law enforcement and public safety in columbus and Bartholomew County. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with officers from police specialty units such as SWAT, Bomb Squad, Detectives, and K-9 to learn how they help keep Columbus safe. Also included, participants will get to partake in a ride along with an officer, tour the dispatch center and jail, and spend an evening learning about fire safety with the Columbus Fire Department. The course begins August 8th, and participants must be at least 18 years old. Sign up can be found here.

Accident to cause delays on I-65 and State Road 11

Indiana State Plice, with the assistance from Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Deputies and CPD, are working a vehicle crash involving a person being struck at the 58 mile marker Southbound on I-65. Traffic had been redirected from Southbound 1-65 to at the 64 mile marker to St Rd 11 for some time. As this is being released, both southbound I 65 lanes have been reopened, but expect some delays on I – 65 north of accident and on St Rd 11.

UPDATE: Silver Alert has been cancelled

UPDATE COLUMBUS, Ind. – The Silver Alert for Stephanie Ann Hudak has been cancelled. CPD detectives, following up on a tip from the public, located Stephanie Hudak at a rural Bartholomew County residence. COLUMBUS, Ind. – Investigators from the Columbus Police Department (CPD) are asking for the public's assistance in locating a local woman who is considered a missing/endangered adult. Officers are seeking information on the whereabouts of Stephanie A. Hudak, 36, who was last seen at her residence in the 200 block of S. Brooks Street on Tuesday night. Hudak is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a dark colored t-shirt and dark colored sweatpants. A Silver Alert has been issued statewide for Hudak, who is believed to be in the company of 41-year-old Steven R. Burton. He is described as being 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing about 170 pounds. They may be traveling together in a red, 1990’s Dodge Durango that has chrome taillights and black wheels. Anyone with information in regards to Hudak's or Burton's whereabouts is urged to call CPD dispatch at 812-379-1689. Information and tips can be left anonymously.

Driver crashes into pond, arrested for DUI

COLUMBUS, Ind. – Columbus Police Department (CPD) public relations officer Lt. Matt Harris says a local man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated after he reportedly drove his vehicle partially into a pond on Thursday evening. Patrolmen responded to the area of Taylor Road, north of 31st Street, in regards to the accident at around 8:45 p.m. CPD noted that a truck had crashed through a fence and was partially in a pond off the east side of the street. Officers allege that the driver of the truck, Troy Fear, 48, of Columbus, had difficulty maintaining his balance and noticed his speech was slurred. The driver was uninjured but was transported to Columbus Regional Health, where law enforcement later applied for a search warrant for a blood draw when the suspect supposedly became uncooperative. After obtaining the blood draw, Fear was placed under arrest and then taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
