FRANKLIN, Ind.–The Franklin City Council acted on two ordinances on Monday night, requesting that 425 acres of land located east of U.S. 31, south of Paul Hand Boulevard/County Road 400N, and west of Graham Road, would be annexed and rezoned. The Franklin Plan Commission had voted 11-0 for the ordinances during a meeting in September.
City council member, Lynn Gray stated that once a property is annexed, it is not assessed for city taxes, but it is not fully exempt from taxes. Once the land is developed, it is then eligible to be put back under city tax assessment.
Mayor Steve Barnett added that they needed to get the process moving or they would miss out on the development of the property for agriculture. State law does not allow land to be annexed shortly before a census, and the next census is in 2020.
The ordinances were approved for a public hearing and will be addressed on the 15th of this month.
